Dead Birds premiered in 2004 before being released to DVD in 2005. It was filmed in Alabama, with most of the action taking place at a plantation house located in Mobile. The opening scene in “Fairhope” was actually filmed on Jackson Lake Island in Maybrook, AL, just outside of Montgomery.
The set was first constructed for Tim Burton’s Big Fish (2003), and it was left standing after filming was completed. It was reused for the opening of Dead Birds shortly after.
Today, the set is easily accessible thanks to the owners of Jackson Lake Island who have turned it into a park/campground. A $5 entry fee gets you in. Some of the facades have been taken down, but there is enough still there for it to be recognizable!
