The Burning was released on May 8, 1981. It was filmed in upstate New York in the summer of 1980, specifically at Camp Stonehaven in Ransomville and Camp Scouthaven in Freedom.
Camp Stonehaven was recently purchased by the city of Ransomville and opened as Stonehaven Nature Preserve, having been privately owned since the time of filming. I attended an On Set Cinema event there in August of 2024 where we watched the movie in the actual boys’ cabin as seen in the movie. The boys’ cabin and the mess hall exterior were the only structures still standing at the time of my visit.
Some other camp structures, including the main lodge by the lakeside, were filmed at Camp Scouthaven in Freedom, New York. That camp is still privately owned so I have not been able to visit that location.
