Thanksgiving was released on November 17, 2023. Directed by Eli Roth, it follows a group of high schoolers being terrorized by a masked killer dressed like a pilgrim, a year after they inadvertently caused a Black Friday tragedy at the local department store.
It’s based on a fake trailer (also directed by Eli Roth) that originated in Grindhouse (2007). That one seemed more like a riff on Halloween or Friday the 13th, but the feature-length version takes more of an inspiration from I Know What You Did Last Summer, and all the better for it, in my opinion. I absolutely adored Thanksgiving, and thought it really captured the feeling of those late ’90s slashers.
It was filmed in Ontario, Canada, mostly in Port Perry and Hamilton.

Fun fact about the parade scene – when the parade turns the corner and the chaos begins, it switches to a completely different location. There is a backlot set consisting of a fake small town main street in Pickering, ON and that is where the actual horror scenes were shot for Thanksgiving. It has also been used in Amazon Prime’s Jack Reacher. It’s not open to the public so I did not visit that location.

This is The Village at Black Creek. It has over forty 19th-century buildings. It only opened for the season on the last day of my trip to Toronto and I made sure I got to it!

I was sure this house was in Toronto, but putting a screenshot into Google Lens helped me find it in Port Perry, where the main street scenes were filmed.
