Ok so it’s not a horror movie, but Sparta, Mississippi has more murders, kidnappings, cults, and voodoo activity than just about any small town I’ve ever seen. Following the exploits of the Sparta Police Department, In The Heat of the Night is one of my favorite shows to put on and play for background noise. There’s always drama and mystery, although never so much mystery that you get lost if you get distracted doing the dishes or something. The first season was filmed in Hammond, LA, so these locations will only cover the 2nd season and beyond when they moved production to Covington, GA. I’m sure I will continue to add to this page, so keep checking back if you’re a Heat fan!

As somebody who loved this show, the characters, the plots, the storylines, the scenes, the accents, the brotherhood, I thank you for taking the time to be so thorough and accurate with your description and photos. This made my day to really be able to see “Sparta” then and now. Thank you for your time and diligence for putting this together. Although I live less than an hour away from Covington it’s no way possible I could have had the opportunity or knowledge of these places to stop and see a fraction of these locations. Thank you!!!! Even though a fictional town it felt real and it’s sort of bittersweet to see it now. But the memories are always on reruns embedded forever.

In the episode AKA Kelly Kay there was a feed and grain warehouse used at the end, looks like most of it has been torn down now. Do you have any history or old photos of that warehouse ? Thanks for a great site !!!

Where is Maybelle Cheshire’s home in the episode featuring Maybelle’s phone sex business. The street # on the episode is 2109. White 2 story antebellum home with white collumns across the front porch
I agree, this is well done and appreciated. Interesting how many of the properties have been maintained, but many others either torn down or abandoned and decaying. I am anxious to see other filming sites I remember. For example, Purvis Lake, shown in several episodes (e.g. Judgement Day). Brewers Pond (Incident at Brewers Pond), the river shown in many episodes (e.g. Private Sessions, The Creek), and the property with that big porch they sat out on for dinner (Judgement Day, Lake Winahatchie with Burgess Merideth), to name a few. Also, I could probably help providing episodes that are missing on some of your pictures. I’m pretty familiar with them.
